Cherkasy was the center for formation of Cossack movement, city residents took part in Khmelnychchyna and Koliivshchyna. The growth of the city, after becoming a regional center, led to its transformation into a major industrial center and the main cultural center of the whole region.
Cherkasy city is located on the right bank of the Kremenchug reservoir, created in the middle reaches of the Dnipro. The city is divided into two urban districts - Pridneprovsky Sosnivskiy and, until recently, also owned by the village Orshanets. The city's population is 283,356 people.
