The Zoo was founded in 1895 as a part of a university on the initiative of A. Brandt a professor of zoology. In the 1930's, new enclosures were built, as well as the main entrance to the zoo that is preserved to this day. During the occupation of the city, many animals were killed, and only due to the incredible efforts of the workers of the zoo in the postwar years a significant part of the collection was managed to be restored.
