In 2001 the square was reconstructed. The sculptural composition with a big statue of Lenin was taken away, and in its place the monument in honour of Ukraine’s Independence was installed. It is a high column crowned by a statue of young woman in traditional Ukrainian attire, holding high in her hands a branch of guelder-rose – a symbol of Ukraine.
Several post-war buildings are on the square: Tchaikovsky National Academy of Music (1955-1959) and Central Post Office (1952-1957).
