"The unique museum-reserve the “Verkhnyi Saltiv “ is named after the local inhabitant, a teacher who discovered and explored the first catacomb burial near the ancient settlement in 1902. He also gave the first description of the settlement and the fortress.
Since then, there have been intensive excavations, for instance, only during the period from 1902 to 1915 there were discovered more than 340 catacomb burials, three burials in pits and seven horse graves. Unique findings were sent to the leading museums of the then Russia (Moscow, St. Petersburg, Helsinki, Odessa).
In 1989, the Verkhnyi Saltiv reserve was established and nowadays offers visitors to explore the exhibits found on its territory (about 3 thousand), to listen to an interesting story about excavations that became the source of exhibits for museums not only in Ukraine, but as well in the neighboring countries. Here you can get comprehensive information about the life of the ancient tribes and our ancestors, take a fascinating excursion to the site of the excavations, visit the catacomb burial grounds. Moreover, the reserve has a wonderful panoramic view as it is located in an extremely picturesque place on the shore of the Siversky Donets river – magnificent photos are guaranteed!"
